Recent Grants 2015-2018

The Portage Foundation began to award grants in 2000. Since that time our biannual grant cycles have provided over $307,000 to support 122 different programs from 99 agencies across Portage County. Our grants typically range from $500 to $3,000. Below we’ve provided a list of grant recipients from 2015-2018 in alphabetical order:

Akron Canton Regional Foodbank
Support food distribution to 23 partner agencies in Portage County. In 2018, support for new Drop Site Program offering food order pick-up closer to agencies’ locations. $3,500
Alzheimer’s Association
Provide 50 copies of the book The 36 Hour Day: A Family Guide to Caring for Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease, Related Dementing Illnesses and Memory Loss in Later Life. $500
American Experience Academy Program
Aquaponics greenhouse in association with HPAC project. Ties into current curriculum and to future career paths. Will supply fresh vegetables and fish all year long. $1,500
The ARC of Summit and Portage Counties
Provide advocacy services (approx. 50 hrs.) to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. $1,000
Art Sparks
Provide 10 weeks of health focused dance programming at Portage County Developmental Disabilities Board and Happy Days School. $1,000
Autism Society of Greater Akron
Support to provide the “Circles” Social Skills Program. $1,000
Axess Pointe
Funding to add endodontic services at the Kent location. $1,500
The Ben Curtis Family Foundation
Support for 75 additional students to receive the Birdie Bag @$40/student ($4 x 10/yr.). $2,000
Big Brothers/Big Sisters
Provide additional matches for children on waiting list. $900
Brimfield Historical Society
First time hosting of the Ohio Humanities Council Ohio Chautauqua in Brimfield. Week-long event in June 2016 with first person historical performances. $500
Coleman Pregnancy Center
Pilot “Nutrition Education Program” for low-income clients. Weekly meetings and demonstrations that include info on budgeting and nutrition. And for expansion of Pregnancy Care Services to 25 new and expectant mothers in Windham $3,200
Coleman Professional Services
Funding to provide 8-12 homeless individuals and families with safe, affordable housing, basic household start-up items and documentation (birth certificates, identification cards) to receive subsidized housing. $1,000
Coleman Totally Tuesday Program
Support for the Totally Tuesday activity program for adults with developmental disabilities to get out into the community for socialization, exercise, cultural development, volunteering, and personal growth. $500
Community Action Council
Implement the 21st Century Community Center After-School Program for Drug Awareness and Bully Prevention. $1,500
Cuyahoga County Public Library PenOhio Project
Recruit six Portage County high schools and collaborative library partners to participate in interscholastic creative writing competition. Based on the 35 year success of Power of the Pen, this program will expand to Portage County high schools, educators and administrators, and will include Portage County libraries. $2,700
Downtown Revitalization Study – KSU
Case Study to explore elements and conditions related to successful downtown revitalization. Professors will research, interview policy makers and key stakeholders and analyze data related to the redevelopment of downtown Kent. Study will be published and shared with other communities. $1,000
Downtown Mantua Revitalization Corp. (DMRC)
Support for “Art On The Hill” held July 11, 2016 including downtown beautification project. Support for Holiday “pop-up gallery” from mid-Nov. through Dec. 2018 $1,950
Embracing Futures
Deliver oral health education programs in Portage County schools. $2,550
Family & Community Services Employee Intervention
Provide funding for the Employee Intervention program to assist approximately 20 formerly homeless and/or low income individuals with obtaining and sustaining jobs. And support to provide Bridges Out of Poverty training materials, trainer certifications, and event coordination. $6,500

Supply pet food to be delivered to participants of Meals In Motion Program. $349

Freedom Township Historical Society
Funding for the restoration of a one room schoolhouse. The building will serve as a museum and a place to host educational and interactive historical programs for the community. $292
Girls On The Run
Provide access for girls between ages 8-13 to Girls on the Run program in 7 Portage County locations (65-90 girls). Focus on character, decision-making, avoiding risky behaviors, self-confidence and physical exercise. $1,740
Green Sprout
Farm to school initiative in partnership with Kent City Schools. Will create vibrant, district-wide school gardening program. Engages community, and partners with KSU College of Public Health and Science Education. $2,500
Green Leaf Family Center
Support for school-based suicide prevention program for middle and high school students for Stanton Middle School in Kent and James A. Garfield High School in Garrettsville. $1,500
Habitat for Humanity of Portage County
Provide support for first phase community development project. $930
Happy Trails Farm Animal Sanctuary – Donor Directed
Support for the mission of Happy Trails. $1,800

Hattie Larlham
Purchase adaptive games and musical instruments for use with residents.
Support for Creative Music Program at the Center of Children with Disabilities in Mantua. Also, live performances (day/evening) of 10 pieces of music composed by Hattie Larlham residents. $2,200
Haven of Portage County
Funding to renovate and operate the only low-barrier 62 bed homeless shelter in Portage County. $3,000
Hiram Farm and Living Community
To expand Hiram Farm’s indoor programming space by adding a pole barn and renovating an existing farmhouse, as well as an additional greenhouse. $6,600
Hiram Village
Assist with development of a multi-use recreational park at the site of the former Hiram Elementary School. $2,500
James A. Garfield Local Schools
Support for the “Seeing the Vision” project to create a visual display in the Garfield High School Commons.” $2,000
Junior Achievement of North Central Ohio
Provide three JA programs in Portage County that will benefit students at Carlin Elementary School in Ravenna. $1,975
Kelly’s Grief Center
Assist with grief support services for those unable to pay. $300
Kent Wells-Sherman House
Provide improvements to offer the use of public space to outside groups for meetings and events. This economic development strategy will also demonstrate the value of preservation and showcase preservation techniques. $1,575
Kidney Foundation of Ohio, Inc.
Direct Assistance in form of medications, transportation and emergency services for 60 patients with kidney disease and related illness in Portage County. $1,250
King Kennedy Community Center
To assist with costs associated with field trips for 100 children during the 8 week summer program, and to purchase laptop computers and Hooked on Phonics learning materials for tutoring center. $2,250
League of Women Voters of Kent
Support for the second annual Edith Chase Lecture Series, a collaborative program between LWV of Kent and Kent Environmental Council, presenting factual information on a timely and important environmental issue. $500
LifeAct (formerly Suicide Prevention Education Alliance)
Suicide prevention programming for Portage County teens. $500
McElrath Improvement Corporation
Provide funding for recreation program for under-served youth for football game field trip. $1,000
Mobile Meals
Provide meals, supplement, and nutritional education to Portage County residents who are unable to pay for home-delivered meals. $500
Moore Education Center – Donor Directed
Support for the Moore Education Center in Aurora, OH. $966
Muscular Dystrophy Association
Support for children to attend summer camp located in Strongsville designed for children ages 6-17 who are affected by neuromuscular disease. $2,400
National Inventors Hall of Fame
Support to expand Club Invention programs to (1) Portage County location (K-6) hosted in Field Local Schools during fall 2017 and spring 2018. $1,600
Nelson Garrettsville Community Cupboard
Support for the SnackPack Program which provides 15-18 healthy snacks per month to more than 260 eligible students in the James A. Garfield School District during the school year. $1,200
Northeast Ohio Genius Project
Expansion to 20 teams from Portage County. Innovative; blends science with the arts. $1,500
Operation Restoration
Support for housing for formerly homeless veterans. $700
Passages Connecting Fathers and Families
Support for the Jobs for Dads program, an integrated workforce, fatherhood and life skills program. $2,000
Portage Animal Protective League – Donor Directed
Support for the PAPL mission of animal welfare. $2,805
Portage Area Recovery Center (PARC)
Funding for Portage County’s only women’s step-down recovery facility. Residents are homeless and jobless. Help given to examine career and education goals; find meaningful and sustainable employment and education given regarding general life skills, money management and independent living. $1,500
Portage County Health District Car Seat Program
To further develop the car seat program by providing more educational resources and more car seats. And to purchase Vehicle Topper Drive-Thru Tent to conduct car seat check events and create awareness and education about child passenger safety. $3,150

Support for the Windham Community Garden at Renaissance Family Center $1,000
RePlay for Kids
Toy adapting workshops in Portage County. Volunteers and local families with disabled children will be taught how to adapt toys for children with disabilities. Local families will receive toolkits and toys. $750
Robinson Memorial Hospital Health Education Center
Assist with costs for an interactive nutrition education program for 35 pre-school and school age children from low income families. $825

Trinity Farm Therapeutic Equestrian Center
Support for Operation SERVE (Supporting the Engagement and Recovery of Veterans using Equines) which provides equine therapy to veterans who suffer from PTSD. $1,200
