Kiwanis Club of Ravenna
The Portage Foundation awarded a grant of $5,000.00 to the Kiwanis Club of Ravenna. The Kiwanis Club is raising funds for the Community Action Council (CAC) of Portage County’s Youth and Family Center.
The Kiwanis Club of Ravenna has taken on a service project to build permanent, ADA compliant playground for the CAC Youth and Family Center. The CAC Youth and Family Center provides after school and summer programming for low income families in Portage County.
Ravenna Kiwanis Club is a local branch of Kiwanis International, with a mission to “change the world one child and one community at a time.” The club provides numerous services for children in Ravenna and surrounding communities.
The awarded grant will assist with equipment purchase and installation costs of playground equipment. Ravenna Kiwanis and CAC Youth and Family Center are seeking donations and grants from a variety of organizations in order to facilitate the purchase and installation of the playground, with a total cost of $75,000.
“Kiwanis is a service organization that serves children and the playground will be located at the CAC” Amy Adams, Co-Chair of the Ravenna Kiwanis Playground Committee said. “These kids are in dire need of this playground.”
The CAC Youth and Family Center was built in the early 1960s and serves approximately 75 children, ages 5 to 15, in Portage County each year. Over 80% of those children come from low income families. The Youth Center’s current playground space, built in the 1960s, has no permanent playground structures, requiring the Youth Center staff to bring out portable playground equipment daily.
“Most of the children that go to this center are low income, so they need all that support after school and during the summer” Adams said. “Kiwanis felt this fit our mission of helping children one town at a time but hopefully for many years to come.”
This permanent ADA compliant playground will provide a safe play space for low income children who take advantage of the Youth Center’s programs. Children and students engaged in CAC programs will also receive daily physical education, movement and play activities, and free play.
