Portage Foundation Activates Rapid Response Fund to Support Local Families During Ongoing Food Assistance Uncertainty

The Portage Foundation has reactivated its Rapid Response Fund to help meet urgent community needs as many local families face the possibility of reduced access to federal food assistance. The Fund will provide emergency, flexible grants to nonprofit organizations and public agencies working to ensure that residents have access to food and essential services during this period of uncertainty.

With more than one million Ohioans relying on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), even temporary disruptions can place immense strain on food banks and social service organizations. Local providers across Portage County are preparing for a potential surge in need—and the Portage Foundation is stepping up to help them respond.

“When our community faces an unexpected challenge, we don’t wait for someone else to act,” said Janice Simmons-Mortimer, Executive Director of the Portage Foundation. “The Rapid Response Fund allows us to get critical dollars to trusted local partners quickly, so families can access food and resources without delay.”

The Rapid Response Fund was originally created during the COVID-19 pandemic to address immediate and unforeseen needs. Today, it continues to serve as a vital local safety net for moments of crisis. Funds raised will be distributed on a rolling basis to ensure that assistance reaches those most affected as quickly as possible.

Priority support will focus on organizations providing emergency food and nutrition assistance and essential health and safety services for Portage County residents. Community members, businesses, and philanthropic partners are invited to join in the effort to support neighbors in need.

“Our food banks and shelters are preparing to serve more people with limited resources,” said Kamelia Fisher, Chair of the Portage Foundation Board. “This fund ensures we can act quickly, keep services running, and protect the dignity and stability of our neighbors.”

Donations to the Rapid Response Fund can be made securely online at portagefoundation.org. Contributions can also be mailed to the Portage Foundation at PO Box 623, Kent, Ohio 44240.

Every contribution—large or small—helps provide immediate relief and strengthens Portage County’s collective ability to respond to crises with compassion and efficiency
